When To See An Orthodontist

Although the average child loses all of his or her baby teeth around age 11-13, it is recommended to bring your child in for an evaluation at the age of seven. Orthodontists are experts when it comes to monitoring the growth and development of the jaws and permanent teeth. Depending on your child’s needs, one of four options may be recommended.

Our Early Treatments

Observation

In most cases, no early intervention is necessary. Dr. Mount is conservative in his approach to early treatment and will only recommend treatment if he would do it for his own children. If no treatment is recommended, we then place your child on either six or 12-month observation visits to monitor your child’s dental development.

Phase 1 Invisalign® / Braces

If our exam and x-ray reveal a problem with the developing teeth such as severe crowding which “blocks out” any permanent teeth, early treatment may be recommended to create room for erupting teeth. This decreases the chance of damage to surrounding teeth and decreases the possible chance for surgery to bring in all the teeth during comprehensive treatment. Most Phase 1 treatments last around 12 months and have specific goals. In almost every case, early treatment is followed up with Phase II treatment around the age of 11-13.

Expansion

Patients ages seven to eleven who have a crossbite, narrow palate, crowding, snoring or airway concerns will benefit from expansion. Palatal expansion is best done at these ages because the bones in the mouth are still growing. Adult patients who require palatal expansion later often require surgery to achieve the same results.

Habit Appliance

Prolonged thumb-sucking and “tongue thrusting” may permanently affect a child’s speech and bite. When indicated, these painless appliances can aid in the correction of these habits and significantly improve a child’s development.

Signs That Your Child Or Teen May Need Braces

Recognizing the signs of orthodontic concerns early can prevent complications. Parents should be vigilant about how their child’s teeth grow and function.

  • Crooked or crowded teeth: Misaligned teeth can cause difficulty with cleaning and overall appearance.
  • Chewing or speaking issues: Alignment problems may affect how your child eats or communicates.
  • Jaw irregularities: Clicking, shifting, or improper alignment of the jaw are common warning signs.
  • Baby tooth timing: Early or late loss of baby teeth can signal potential orthodontic concerns.

Choosing The Right Orthodontic Treatment

Each child and teen has unique orthodontic needs, and choosing the right treatment option is important for their comfort and success. Dr. Mount will guide you in making the best choice.

  • Metal braces: Durable and effective for complex alignment issues.
  • Ceramic braces: Blend with natural teeth for a more subtle look.
  • Clear aligners: Nearly invisible and removable, ideal for responsible children.

The Benefits Of Early Orthodontic Treatment

Early orthodontic care can guide proper jaw development and create room for permanent teeth. Addressing issues early helps avoid more complex treatments in the future.

  • Jaw guidance: Supports proper jaw growth and prevents severe misalignment.
  • Improved facial symmetry: Enhances the balance and proportion of facial features.
  • Reduced future complications: Helps avoid extensive treatments later in life.
  • Boosted confidence: A straighter smile encourages a positive self-image.

Frequently Asked Questions

The length of treatment varies, but most children wear braces for one to three years. Timelines depend on factors like age, the severity of alignment issues, and compliance with care instructions.

  • Typical duration: Treatment usually lasts one to three years.
  • Factors affecting time: The complexity of the case and how well your child follows care guidelines.
  • Post-braces care: Retainers are necessary to maintain results after braces.

We are passionate about creating a great experience at every visit for every patient. We will coach your child through how to clean their braces and through any chances he or she should expect.

Certain foods can damage braces, so being mindful of dietary choices is essential. Following recommended eating habits helps keep braces in good condition.

  • Sticky treats: Avoid gum, caramel, and chewy candies.
  • Hard foods: Nuts, popcorn, and raw vegetables can break brackets or wires.
  • Modified meals: Cut apples, carrots, and other firm foods into small pieces.

Choosing between braces and Invisalign for children depends on their orthodontic needs and level of responsibility. Each option offers unique benefits, but some may be more suitable for younger kids.

  • Braces are highly durable: Ideal for children who may struggle to handle removable aligners responsibly.
  • Always in place: Braces work continuously, making them a better choice for kids who might lose or forget to wear aligners.
  • Invisalign is discreet: A clear option that works well for teenagers with simpler alignment issues.
  • Flexible for meals: The removable design of Invisalign makes it easier for teens to eat without restrictions, as long as they remember to put them back on.

Orthodontic care does more than straighten teeth. It improves oral health by correcting alignment issues and supporting proper jaw function.

  • Easier cleaning: Straight teeth are simpler to brush and floss.
  • Healthier bite: Proper alignment reduces wear on teeth and jaw strain.
  • Long-term benefits: Prevents future dental complications.
