At Mount Orthodontics, we know that starting orthodontic treatment comes with many questions.
Whether you’re considering braces, Invisalign®, or retainers, we’re here to help. Below, we’ve answered some of the most common questions about orthodontic care to help you feel confident in your journey toward a healthier, straighter smile.
General Orthodontics
What Is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry that focuses on diagnosing, preventing, and treating misaligned teeth and jaw issues. Treatment typically involves braces, clear aligners, or other orthodontic appliances to correct alignment and improve oral health.
At What Age Should My Child See An Orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age seven. Early visits allow orthodontists to detect and address potential issues before they become more complex.
Do Adults Need Orthodontic Treatment?
Yes! Orthodontic treatment isn’t just for kids and teens. Many adults choose braces or Invisalign to improve their smiles and oral health.
Braces & Invisalign®
What Types Of Braces Do You Offer?
At Mount Orthodontics, we offer several options to fit your needs:
- Metal braces: Durable and effective for all cases.
- Ceramic braces: Tooth-colored for a more discreet appearance.
- Invisalign: A nearly invisible, removable alternative to traditional braces.
How Long Will I Need To Wear Braces?
Treatment length varies based on individual needs, but most patients wear braces for 12 to 24 months. Your orthodontist will provide a personalized timeline during your consultation.
Is Invisalign® As Effective As Braces?
Yes! Invisalign is highly effective for mild to moderate cases of misalignment. However, severe cases may still require traditional braces.
Do Braces Hurt?
Braces may cause mild discomfort when first placed and after adjustments, but this is temporary and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief.
Can I Play Sports With Braces?
Yes, but we recommend wearing a mouthguard to protect your braces and teeth during contact sports.
Retainers & Post-Treatment Care
Why Do I Need To Wear A Retainer After Treatment?
After your braces or Invisalign treatment is complete, retainers help keep your teeth in place and prevent them from shifting back to their original positions.
How Long Do I Need To Wear My Retainer?
Most patients start with full-time wear for several months, then transition to nighttime wear indefinitely to maintain results.
What Happens If I Lose My Retainer?
Contact us as soon as possible. Delaying replacement could allow your teeth to shift, requiring additional orthodontic treatment.
Oral CareDuring Treatment
How Do I Keep My Braces Clean?
- Brush after every meal.
- Use floss threaders or water flossers to clean between brackets.
- Avoid sticky and hard foods that could damage your braces.
Can I Whiten My Teeth While Wearing Braces?
We do not recommend whitening your teeth with braces on. With certain Invisalign cases, you may be able to whiten your teeth during treatment. Dr. Mount will discuss the ideal timing of whitening your teeth during your orthodontic treatment.
How Often Should I Visit The Orthodontist?
Regular check-ups every 4 to 8 weeks are essential to monitor progress and make necessary adjustments.
Emergencies & Repairs
What Should I Do If A Bracket Or Wire Breaks?
If a bracket comes loose or a wire pokes your cheek, contact our office. In the meantime, use orthodontic wax to cover sharp edges and minimize irritation.
What If My Braces Are Causing Sores?
Orthodontic wax can help alleviate irritation. If any sores persist, contact our office or tell us at your next visit so we can make any necessary adjustments for comfort.
Can I Still Visit My Regular Dentist?
Yes! Regular dental cleanings and check-ups are essential during orthodontic treatment to maintain good oral health.
